Brothers found guilty of machete attack

Two brothers are in jail after a jury found them each guilty of hacking a teenager with a machete over a stolen moped.

Derek Weeks Jr, 28, and Javon Weeks, 30, were remanded by Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves until their sentencing in two months’ time.

The court heard earlier that 15-year-old Jahkumani Riley-Smith lost a finger in the attack. A blow to the side of his neck also opened a six-inch laceration.

The victim admitted taking the vehicle from the driveway of the residence on Hermitage Road, Smith’s, where the brothers lived.

Later on the night of March 8, 2014, he was set upon by the pair while trying to kick-start the moped in a nearby open area.

Security cameras at nearby homes caught the attack, in which the brothers were said to have driven the short distance from their house to deal out what prosecutor Alan Richards called “rough justice”.

Derek Weeks Jr was accused of wielding the machete, while his brother kicked the victim. The victim testified that he was told they were going to teach him a lesson for “messing with our bike”.

While the jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict, nine out of the 12 found the brothers guilty of wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm, as well as having a bladed article in public.

Witnesses for the defence told the court that the two had spent the evening entertaining guests at home — an account that Mr Richards said had been fabricated.

Reviewing their records, Mr Justice Greaves opted for social reports and drug and alcohol assessments, telling Weeks Jr that the reports were relevant “given the manner in which, based on the prosecution’s case, you launched the attack and the injuries you caused to the young man”.

The two were remanded until the September 1 arraignments session.
