Rai Simons’ recent performances for Bermuda have caught the eye of Dean Saunders, the new Chesterfield manager.

Simons signed for Chesterfield from non-league neighbours Ilkeston in April — when Paul Cook was still in charge at the Proact Stadium.

The teenage striker was part of the Bermuda squad for the World Cup campaign, and it was his performances as a substitute against Guatemala that got his manager’s attention.

Saunders, who has been in the job for six weeks, said the 19-year-old will form part of the competition for places in his side when preseason gets under way next month.

“I saw he played in the World Cup games and I’ve watched the video footage. He did well,” Saunders said.

“He looks quick and direct and strong. He needs some coaching but there’s something there to work with and he, like all the rest of the players, will be given a chance in the preseason matches.”

Simons will have his work cut out for him, however, with Chesterfield already having six other strikers in their squad. Armand Gnanduillet, Byron Harrison, Manny Dieseruvwe and Sam Clucas can all play up front, as can Jake Beesley who is in the Chesterfield academy.

Saunders has also signed former Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, and has said he “might even bring in another one.”
