Wilkinson never doubted Town’s next generation

Youth explosion: Richardson-Martin, left, and another talented youngster Llineko Millett leave Vincent Minors, of Flanagan’s Onions on the ground at St John’s field during a Premier Division game earlier this season.

Dandy Town are living up to their reputation as the “Youth Explosion”.

The 2014-15 season has seen a small cast of promising teenagers explode onto the Premier Division scene and feature prominently in Town’s impressive turn around after making a sluggish start to their Premier Division title defence.

Far from being intimidated by players with more experience, teenagers such as Jahtino Richardson-Martin and Ayshaun Smith have made a seamless transition to the senior level where they continue to impress with a skill set and maturity belying their tender years.

“Jahtino is going from strength to strength while Ayshuan Smith has also come in and scored some vital goals for us,” Jomar Wilkinson, the Town coach, said. “Right now I have a few 16-year-olds in the squad and they are doing a hell of a job for us so the future looks good for Dandy Town.”

An attacking midfielder, Richardson-Martin has really come into his own this season, scoring goals fairly consistently, including a hat trick against St George’s Colts, his first at senior level.

“Jahtino has done a superb job,” Wilkinson added. “He is definitely a candidate for Youth Player of the Year.”

Not too long ago many had written Town off after the club made one of their worst starts to a league campaign in recent memory. Now, with two rounds remaining in the 2014-15 season, the champions trail leaders Somerset Trojans by a solitary point.

Wilkinson said while others may have written his team off, he never doubted in his players’ ability to turn their flagging fortunes around.

“We have a strong belief system at Dandy Town,” he said. “So, even four games into the season with only one point the team still believed they could win the league.”

Town still have some work to do and must also rely on leaders Trojans slipping up if they are to retain their title, but Wilkinson feels good about his team’s chances of adding more silverware to the trophy cabinet.

“We are going to try and keep the pressure on and make sure we do what we have to,” he said. “If Somerset slips up we will be right there.”

Town will now look for maximum points from their last two games against Southampton Rangers at home and Flanagan’s Onions away at Goose Gosling Field which has proven to be fertile hunting ground for them lately.

Town will be the favourites against relegation threatened Rangers and Onions, but Wilkinson is not taking anything for granted — and for good reason.

“They both have a reason to play for so it’s going to be difficult games,” he said. “Every game at the business end of the season is difficult, so we are going to stay humble and focused and try to get the job done.”
