Cougars look to sign off in style

Four teams will switch their focus from next weekend’s Friendship Trophy semi-finals to the final round of this year’s league matches on Sunday.

The games were postponed on November 16, the day the Bermuda Football Association decided to scrap all league games in order to hold an emergency affiliates meeting after shootings outside the National Sports Centre and Somerset Cricket Club on the evening of the Dudley Eve Trophy final.

Devonshire Cougars lead the Premier Division by two points over Hamilton Parish in what has been an intriguing title race with just six points separating the top eight teams.

Recent wins by Dandy Town Hornets and Southampton Rangers have also tightened things up in the bottom, where only four points separate bottom side Rangers from Somerset Trojans and North Village in mid-table.

A few weeks ago Rangers, Dandy Town and Flanagan’s Onions were in the bottom three and points are critical for all teams for different reasons, with Jomar Wilkinson, the Town coach, recently insisting that his team was still in with a chance of retaining their title.

Onions and Rangers will complete the first half of their league schedule on Saturday night when they meet at Goose Gosling Field.

Victory for Onions would move them, temporarily at least, up to fourth in the standings. A win for Rangers would take them off the bottom for the first time and move them level with Onions and St George’s Colts.

Cougars have been impressive under returning coach Andrew Bascome, although they had a hiccup last weekend when they lost to PHC Zebras on penalties in the Friendship Trophy.

They are leading the division thanks to Rangers who won their make-up match against Hamilton Parish to prevent the Kieshon Smith’s side from moving into first place. Parish host Dandy Town at Wellington Oval on Sunday while Cougars welcome Somerset Trojans to Devonshire Recreation Club.

North Village host Friendship Trophy semi-finalists Robin Hood at Bernard Park while St George’s travel to Southampton Oval to take on Rangers, hoping to bounce back from their 6-0 thumping at the hands of Town last weekend in a Friendship Trophy tie.
