Ocean mail: Andrew Davidson, with his 17-month-old daughter Fern found a message in a bottle last weekend off his house in Somerset. The message was launched by a German travel agent while returning to Fort Lauderdale on a cruise in February 2009

Avid beachcomber Andrew Davidson always wanted to find a message in a bottle when he was a little boy.

He never did — but as an adult he has come across two, the latest having been cast overboard from a cruise ship almost six years ago.

Mr Davidson was outside his home in Sandys with his 17-month-old daughter Fern on Saturday morning when he made his latest discovery.

“We live right on the beach at Scotts Bay and I saw the bottle from my home,” said the 38-year-old father-of-one.

“I went down to pick it up and it had this note in it with a pen.

“It was in really good condition. I had to break the bottle to get the note and we could actually smell the wine — it still smelt like an empty wine bottle.”

The note was from a German travel agent named Ralf Kaiser, returning to Fort Lauderdale on the Celebrity Constellation cruise ship from a “wonderful” trip to Cayman, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica and Mexico.

An e-mail address was included and Mr Davidson got in touch, telling Mr Kaiser: “It looks like you had a good voyage and went to some beautiful countries but Bermuda wasn’t one of them.

“You will have to follow your bottle and come visit Bermuda some time.”

Mr Kaiser replied yesterday to say he threw the bottle overboard in February 2009. “I’m very happy that you find it,” he wrote.

Coincidentally, Mr Davidson’s first bottle find, several years ago on a different beach, was also set adrift by Germans, on a boat near the Azores.

“Maybe they are more romantic than you’d think,” he joked.

“That one didn’t have an e-mail address. I Googled the name but I couldn’t find it, so I have never responded to it.”
