Michael Dunkley called on Bermudians to continue the “demonstration of strength and unity” shown in the wake of Hurricane Gonzalo.

The Premier praised the responses of emergency services in the aftermath of this month’s storms, and offered sympathy to 4,000 customers who have remained without electricity.

He said he was getting daily updates, adding: “I can assure you that these men and women are working around the clock to ensure that every last customer has their power restored,” he said.

After two weeks of Emergency Measures Organisation (EMO) meetings, Mr Dunkley commended the organisation, but said the group would meet “in the next couple of weeks” to discuss areas for improvement — such as strengthening the signal of the emergency radio broadcast.

The Premier also called on local employers to take any opportunity presented by the clean-up to help provide jobs.

“I am encouraging our business owners in construction, landscaping, or any other industry that will be involved in the long term repair and restoration efforts to make a concerted effort at providing their fellow Bermudians with a chance to work,” he said.

“This is an opportunity to continue the good will that has been generated since this storm hit — friend helping friend, neighbour helping neighbour.”
