Calm after the storm: Rob Johnson and Dana Behlke were married at The Reefs less than 24 hours after Hurricane Gonzalo hit the Island

While most of Bermuda was clearing up the carnage left by Hurricane Gonzalo one couple were preparing for their big day.

Dana Behlke and Rob Johnson had expected the worst when they heard a Category 3 hurricane was headed directly for Bermuda the night before their wedding.

But against all the odds the New Yorkers were married on Saturday afternoon in glorious sunshine at The Reefs.

The couple, who were staying at the Fairmont Southampton, were moved into the amphitheatre along with other guests as Gonzalo hit the Island.

And they returned to their room at 3am on Saturday morning with no idea whether their wedding would go ahead.

Mrs Johnson told The Royal Gazette: “I ran down to The Reefs in the morning to see if the roads were clear and how the hotel looked.

“I had no idea whether we could go ahead, but at 11am Kathleen, our wedding planner, got in touch and said we were good to go.

“I really could not believe it. I was so excited, but I did not really have a chance to get nervous.”

At 5pm on Saturday the couple were married in front of friends and family on Caso’s Point at the Reefs.

Mrs Johnson said: “It was the most perfect day.

“I’m so grateful to Kathleen and all the vendors for doing everything they did.

“I’m sure each one of them had their own family commitments and concerns after the hurricane but they all came out for us.

“Our time in Bermuda really has been an incredible. There have been tears, anxiety, definitely a bit of fear and then overwhelming joy.

“And the wedding itself could not have been more perfect. I could not stop smiling.”
