Smith and Kings can sniff promotion

Smith and Kemi Kings hold a one-goal advantage going into tomorrow's promotion play-off second leg

Jonté Smith and his Kemi Kings team-mates will enter tomorrow’s promotion play-off second leg away to VIFK knowing that a draw would be enough to elevate them to the next tier of Finnish football.

Kings won the first leg 1-0 on a first-half goal from Sasa Jovovic that proved to be the difference between the two sides.

“We are pleased with the result,” said Smith, reflecting upon last weekend’s first-leg victory. “We had the chances to make the lead more significant, but a win and a clean sheet is very important going into the second leg.”

Smith and his team-mates will now look to protect their slim advantage. “Every game is different, so we have to be focused and play at our best to ensure that we don’t slip up this great chance we have to get promoted,” Smith said. “Hopefully we will be celebrating at the end of the second leg.”

Smith, who is approaching the end of his short-term contract with Kemi Kings, the Kakkonen North champions, topped the scoring charts during the regular season with 23 goals in 25 appearances, including hat-tricks against Gamlakarleby, Jakobstads and PK-37.

He joined Kings initially on loan in March from Crawley Town, of England’s Sky Bet League One, before signing a deal that has kept him in Scandinavia until the end of the season.
