A stabbing victim was being treated in Intensive Care last night after a fight erupted on Front Street.

The injured party was rushed to hospital in the early hours of Monday morning following the brawl in Hamilton.

Police have revealed that the stabbing victim was not the only person to be injured during the disturbance.

And Superintendent Martin Weekes said that ‘a number’ of people had been arrested as part of the ongoing investigation.

“At around 3.30am police were called to a fight on Front Street involving a number of people,” he said. “One person was seriously injured in that fight.

“We are appealing for witnesses to that fight, to people running away from the scene, people seen discarding clothing around the area, and anything that might lead us to assist with these inquiries.”

The seriously injured victim, whose gender and age have yet to be revealed, was taken to the Intensive Care Unit at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

“We have a number of people in custody right now; inquiries are still in the early stages, and obviously that’s why we need the witnesses to tell us who did what,” Supt Weekes said.

“But we have some good CCTV coverage and we will be working with that as well.

“There were a number of injuries apart from the one that’s in ICU; a number of other people were injured in this fight.”

The fight broke out between the junctions with Parliament Street and Burnaby Street at about 3.30am on Monday.

Supt Weekes said people were seen discarding bloodstained clothing at the scene.

The fight was not believed to be linked to Saturday’s chase of a motorist by gunmen on a motorcycle.

However, he said, police are “investigating a number of incidents right now — some of which could be connected”.

Officers were yesterday trawling closed-circuit television footage, as well as scouring the scene for evidence.

They are appealing for witnesses — and those who ran from the scene — to get in touch by calling police on 295-0011 or the confidential and anonymous Crimestoppers hotline on 800-8477.
