Students pay tribute to dead classmate

Paying tribute: Berkeley Institute students raised nearly $2,000 for the family of dead classmate Shijuan Mungal

Students at the Berkeley Institute have raised more than $1,700 for the family of their classmate Shijuan Mungal.

The 16-year-old’s friends and schoolmates came together on Friday to pay tribute to him at a special Peace and Unity grub day.

The proceeds — nearly $1,800 — and additional contributions totalled $2,000 for the Mungal family.

Students wore black and white to honour their classmate — the colours of the Under-16 football team he played for, PHC Zebras.

PHC flags and jerseys were also displayed.

“No one ever expects one so young to die so unexpectedly,” said Berkeley Institute principal Dr Phyllis Curtis-Tweed. “The untimely death of Shijuan Mungal was traumatic to everyone.

“The Berkeley community has come together as one to show care, love, and respect for Shijuan Mungal and his family.

“The fundraiser was the students’ idea stemming from the Student Council and fully supported by the administration, faculty and staff.

“I am particularly proud of our students’ outpouring of compassion and their ability to pull together to achieve a goal.

“This event affirms our sense of hope and faith in the potential of our students to be change agents and to make a positive difference in their Island home.”

Shijuan died this month following an altercation on September 8 on Ord Road.

Kiahna Edwards, 31, from Paget, has been charged with his murder.

A funeral service was held for Shijuan — son of Shiloh Henderson and Chandra Mungal — yesterday at Hamilton Seventh-day Adventist Church.
