Green has deep ties to the US Democratic Party

Shawn Crockwell

US political consultant Derrick Green has a history in Bermuda dating back to 2008.

A friend of Tourism Minister Shawn Crockwell from the days they both studied at Oakwood University in Alabama, Mr Green was hired to promote the Bermuda Democratic Alliance (BDA) six years ago.

He came to the Island at Mr Crockwell’s invitation and later worked for the new One Bermuda Alliance in the successful 2012 election campaign — an association that continues today.

Mr Crockwell was one of the defectors from the old United Bermuda Party and helped form the BDA, which later united with most of the UBP to create the One Bermuda Alliance (OBA).

Mr Green was, with former Premier Craig Cannonier’s business associate Stephen DeCosta, a signatory on the OBA-linked Bermuda Political Action Club (BPAC) account, set up with $350,000 in donations from US tycoon Nathan Landow and American business associates.

A report by OBA chairman Thad Hollis on Friday said the party executive was unaware of the fund — used for a grassroots campaign — and said it broke strict party rules on accounting and oversight.

Mr Green has been involved in Democratic Party politics in the US since his university days, when he was a 1992 volunteer in the Bill Clinton presidential campaign. He went on to work for New Jersey Senator Frank Lautenberg and Jon S Corzine, a former US Senator and New Jersey Governor from 2006-10.

Mr Green also worked for the Democrats in Prince George’s County, Maryland, becoming deputy chief of staff to county executive Jack B Johnson before moving into political lobbying.

His firm, Green Consultants, is based in Maryland, near the offices of US tycoon Nathan Landow, whose $350,000 donation to the OBA election campaign in 2012 sparked the Jetgate row, which forced the resignation of then-Premier Craig Cannonier — although Mr Cannonier denied any wrongdoing.
