Prosecution wraps up in ‘bullet in fridge’ trial

Prosecutors closed their case yesterday in the Supreme Court against a man accused of handling and firing a gun inside a Sandys residence.

Zikai Cann, 24, of Seawall Drive, Sandys, has denied the charges, which date to an unspecified day in November, 2009.

According to the Crown, a 9mm bullet was subsequently recovered from the body of the fridge in the White Gate Lane home of resident Tiffany Eatherley, who appeared earlier this week as a witness at the trial.

Her apartment was searched after Ms Eatherley was arrested that December. She was later released. Mr Cann, meanwhile, left the Island on December 24, 2009, and returned on May 4, 2010.

The jury heard that Mr Cann was not arrested until November 1, 2012.

Forensic scientist Candy Zuleger subsequently identified him as the major donor of DNA recovered from a jacket, seized from Ms Eatherley’s apartment while she was in police custody.

According to texts retrieved from Ms Eatherley’s phone, she messaged a friend on the night before her arrest, saying: “My boy just left me talking about he needs to drop some clothes up here.”

The next day, a text to the same friend read: “I was calling you just now to tell you that serious crime just called me to save I need to come into their office ASAP, talking about one of their investigations.”

The text added: “I don’t know why, but I have to go — WTF?”

According to counsel, a verdict is likely today from the jury, following three days of trial before Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves.
